TraceTogether: Is Singapore’s Big Brother Watching You?
In Singapore’s push to encourage citizens to download the TraceTogether application last May, Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan had assured citizens that the data collected would be used solely for “contact tracing purposes only.” However, this was proven false as it was recently revealed that the data can actually be used to aid criminal investigations. In fact, the TraceTogether data has already been used for a murder investigation to date.
As Singapore backtracks on its promise over the use of TraceTogether data, many Singaporeans have been left upset with concerns over a potential loss of privacy and questions regarding the government’s lack of transparency and credibility.
