HDB new initiatives
In summary, this article talks about the Singapore government’s new initiative to launch more affordable public housing for senior citizens and the release of 3740 new BTO flats.
With the introduction of this new initiative, the new housing concept comes with a mandatory service package to support seniors who wish to live on their own and yet enjoy some care, support and communal activities in the vicinity. The prices range from $52,000 to $60,000 for a 32 sq m unit and are sold on short leases between 15 and 35 years. These units cannot be resold or rented out. In essence, such units will solely be for the usage of the elderly to have a comfortable and affordable home for the remaining years of their life. Such flats are expected to be completed in 2024. As for the new release of BTO flats, this is to curb the growing demand for affordable and new housing for the next generation of young adults as currently the applications for BTO flats in Singapore tremendously outweigh
The supply. This in turn has created a surge in resale HDB prices and a situation of numerous transactions being COV (cash over valuation). These new released BTOs are estimated to be completed sometime in 2026. With the growing demand for housing and the increase in land bid prices throughout Singapore, many young adults and elderly folks are facing the issue of being homeless. As such, these new initiatives by the government are imperative to assist those in need and in turn cooling the property prices overall.
