“It’s not the time to play it safe” – Young people are quitting their jobs in this economic crisis

Darren has been in the same job for the past six years, clocking more than 10 hours a day in a statutory board. He gets along with his colleagues, has good relations with his director, and is good at what he does. Being steadily promoted up the ranks, he would have been made the Assistant Director soon, if not for his resignation last month.

This sounds like a perfect example of breaking an “iron rice bowl” – a Chinese metaphor describing an occupation with guaranteed job security, steady income and benefits. During this time of great uncertainty, leaving a stable, full-time job without a new job offer at hand could also draw grief, confusion and undisguised disdain from the people around you.

Why then, do people like Darren, resign from their jobs now when so many people are hungry for one? Follow this link to find out more.
