Burqa or Dementor? Kim K showed up faceless at the Met Gala 2021

Kim Kardashian provokes memes and sentiments by showing up faceless at this year’s highly publicized Met Gala 2021. In this extravagant fashion event where everyone shows off their best face, Kim Kardashian makes a bold statement that she is recognizable just by her body silhouette.

As one of the most photographed women in the world, Kim Kardashian arguably drew the most eyes at this year’s Met Gala with the theme of ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. Dressed from head to toe (literally) in Balenciaga, her all-black outfit choice provoked many opinions and thoughts from the social media scene.

The controversial outfit has similarities with the burqa which the Muslim community felt was “bizarre” and “distasteful”.

“When Muslim women choose to wear skin-covering abayas and burqas, they’re considered stifling and oppressive — the furthest thing from high fashion and glamorous,” Hafsa Lodi, a Muslim writer wrote. “Burkas can provide wearers with anonymity, which is deemed a ‘threat to security’ in many areas of the Western world.”

Further internet memes joked about how Kim K arrived as a Dementor, the soul-eating creature from Harry Potter and some even claimed she came to the event as “a sock”.

Later that day, Kim K bit back at haters as she shared behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram with the caption: “What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!”

Others have praised Kim K for the thought-provoking piece in comparison to the rest of the celebrities who “played it safe” in relevance to this year’s theme of playing homage to the nation. Some commented that this portrayal of anonymity was her own interpretation of American independence.
