Canada accuses China of committing genocide against Muslim minorities
Backed by both Liberal and Conservative lawmakers, a non-binding motion accusing China of committing genocide against Muslim minorities in Xinjiang won overwhelming approval in Canada. This was in response to the ongoing controversy over China’s callous treatment towards Muslim minorities, where around 2 million Muslims were reported to experience indoctrination, physical abuse, and even forced sterilisation while detained in detention centers.
The motion puts pressure on the Trudeau’s government to take a stronger stance on China, further escalating already strained diplomatic relationships between Canada and China. Canada is also the first country to semi-officially support calls for the International Olympic Committee to shift the 2022 Winter Olympic Games from Beijing over allegations of human rights abuses. This was met with China’s rebuttal that Canada should stop politicizing the 2022 Beijing Games as this would compromise “the interests of the international Olympic movement and athletes from all countries”.
Despite allegations from multiple countries like the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, China continues to deny allegations of human rights abuses against Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. International investigations were thus called upon to bring further light on the matter.
