Consumers should pay if they take 3 or more plastic bags at supermarkets: Citizen Workgroup
When the circuit breaker occurred in Singapore, citizens could only order takeaways as eating out was not an option. This has caused an increase in disposable waste. Given that plastic usage has been an ongoing concern, the citizen workgroup has recommended the need to start paying for plastic bags to prevent excess usage. However, this proposal can pose an issue on individuals earning a lower wage. Thus, this calls for further discussions.
Other community efforts can include the distribution of reusable cutleries, having a one-day “no plastic” policy per week, and rewarding businesses that are making the efforts to reduce the usage of disposables. Furthermore, retailers and manufacturers will soon be required to do reporting on their packaging usages. With the increased efforts, Singapore hopes to see an improvement in future.
