Death Sentence for “Drug Trafficker” in Singapore Sparks Outrage

Syed Suhail, 44, was arrested in August 2011 and convicted of possession with the intent to traffic over 38g of illegal drug substances and just this past week, Syed was informed that his execution would be carried on 18 September 2020. His story gained traction following the leak of a letter he had written in which he stated that despite his imminent death, he could not even have a final meeting with his family members, who live in Malaysia, due to the current border restrictions as a result of the pandemic situation. This has stirred quite the reaction both locally and abroad, with many condemning the Singapore government’s “draconian” laws to combat drug abuse and pleading for clemency for Syed.
