Have you been binging on Netflix or using Zoom videos more frequently? You are probably guilty of exacerbating carbon footprint

Coronavirus has halted many business operations in different sectors, such as the aviation and manufacturing industry. As a result, there is a massive reduction in global emissions. However, this is contrary to another sector where energy usage has skyrocketed – the IT sector.

Do you know the IT sector has an equivalent carbon footprint as the aviation industry’s fuel emission?

Most of the energy that comes from the IT sector arose from powering internet servers at the data centers that will account for up to 6% of global carbon dioxide emissions by 2030. Our usage of the internet and demand for better and higher quality videos will not stop growing but this demand is neither free nor sustainable.

The solution? Better computer chips and Australia has discovered a material that could replace our conventional silicon-based electronics for a more energy-friendly one. This is only the beginning as the energy problem in the IT sector grows more urgent each day.
