International powers cry foul as Malaysia deports over 1000 Myanmar nationals

On Tuesday (Feb 23), just over 3 weeks since the military coup in Myanmar, Malaysain officials opted to deport over 1000 Myanmar nationals back to their homeland. Despite an order from the KL High Court to halt the deportation proceedings, Malaysian government officials refused to offer explanation for why they deported the 1,086 immigrants.


The United States has voiced concern over this move by Malaysia, citing the “long documented history of human rights abuses against members of religious and ethnic minority groups” in Myanmar. Amnesty International and other activist groups will continue to challenge the move in court, as Malaysian officials continue to defend their actions.
