Protest against LGBTQ+ discrimination by MOE
The protest began with fivc individuals gathered outside the MOE building, holding signs that said “#FIX SCHOOLS NOT STUDENTS”, “WHY ARE WE NOT IN YOUR SEX ED”, “HOW CAN WE GET As IF YOUR CARE FOR US IS AN F”, “trans students will NOT be erased” and “trans students deserve access to HEALTHCARE & SUPPORT”. By the time the police arrived only three remained. They were given multiple warnings, but refused to leave each time, and were eventually arrested under the Public Order Act on Tuesday, 26 January.
The protest was staged in support of and response to, a student’s allegations that MOE had prevented her from proceeding with hormone therapy despite being clinically diagnosed by IMH with gender dysphoria. The protestors urged for Education Minister Larwence Wong to recognise and apologise for “the harm done to LGBTQ+ through the school’s discriminatory practices”.
