Social media turns Rapper into Raper.
Chinese-Canadian celebrity star Kris Wu was arrested by Beijing authorities over social media’s allegations of rape. The People’s Procuratorate of Beijing’s Chaoyang district claimed that they had the approval to arrest him “on suspicion of rape”.
The allegations stem from the #MeToo movement which was broached in 2018 regarding women’s experiences of sexual harassment including influential public figures.
Du Meizhu, currently a 19-year-old student, accused Wu last month of date-raping her when she was 17, resulting in a barrage of public criticism and luxury brands dropping deals with him. Following Du’s accusations, more alleged victims have spoken out online, accusing Wu of his predatory behaviour, such as inviting them to boozy karaoke parties.
Wu, 30, debuted as a member of the K-pop boyband EXO and transitted into launching a successful solo career as a singer, actor, model and variety show judge. The China Association of Performing Arts stated that such negative influence on society from renowned celebrities is “intolerable for the industry”. As such, not only will Wu Yifan receive legal actions, but also face employment boycotts and other punishments imposed by the industry. In addition, Wu’s Canadian citizenship was also seized by police.
Behold the power of social media, stripping “free” out of Wu’s “freestyle”.
