The Truth about Xiaxue – Singapore’s Controversial Blogger

Contrary to popular opinion, Xiaxue (Wendy Cheng) is not an attentionwhore for the sake of it. Stories from her childhood tells us that it is the result of her upbringing. Xiaxue was one of the brightest kid in her primary school and she was put on a pedestal by her parents and teachers. She loved the attention and it made her extremely arrogant. However, she came to realize that her grades were amongst the bottom few during her time at River Valley High School. She decided to be the last if she could not be the top. She turned into a delinquent and got arrested for shoplifting. Towards the end, she graduated and entered a polytechnic and that’s when she started blogging.

According to Xiaxue herself, her recent controversial with politician Raeesah Khan stemmed from her genuine concern for the future of Singapore and there were no intentions to cause a divide. She admits making mistakes along the way in her blogging career but she would always apologize to a person if they ever come up to her and respectfully tells her that she has hurt them through her post. She finds public apologies meaningless as opposed to apologizing personally to the person she has hurt.

Most of Xiaxue’s opinions on issues like Black Lives Matter, multiple cases of sexual harassment at NUS, and etc. are not at all controversial and they hardly deviate from what “social justice warriors” are saying online. She finds it unnecessary to voice out these opinions that are held by the majority as there is no added value. Xiaxue puts herself out as an advocate for freedom of expression and authenticity, she also despises being politically correct.
